Tapered roller bearings are an important bearing option for many types of mechanical components. They allow radial and axial loads to act on the bearing assembly simultaneously. The unique feature of tapered roller bearings is the tapered geometry of their rollers. It is aligned with what is commonly called a cone, and the corresponding raceway of the outer ring. The design ensures optimal load distribution along the length of the roller, resulting in increased strength and reduced stress concentrations. The angle of taper is critical and determines the bearing’s ability to handle various axial and radial loads. Tapered roller bearings concentrate combined loads onto a central rotating axis. The axial load carrying capacity of tapered roller bearings increases with increasing raceway contact angle – their conical shape results in less overall stress on the interface components. We’ll take a closer look at the various types of tapered roller bearings, including single-row, double-row, and four-row configurations, and how each offers unique advantages for specific applications.

Tapered roller bearings are separable bearings. The rollers taper into a conical shape, and the corresponding raceways they connect are angled to accommodate their tapered form. The rollers themselves are held in cages that fit the inner and outer rings. The cage of a tapered roller bearing is somewhat different from the cage of other types of bearings. The most common cage type for tapered roller bearings is the pin cage. rollers result in greater load capacity but reduce the bearing’s speed, dynamic loading, vibration and deceleration capabilities. Tapered roller bearings are divided into different structural types such as single-row, double-row and four-row tapered roller bearings according to the number of rows of rollers installed.

Due to their large contact surface area, tapered roller bearings are able to withstand heavy axial and radial loads. The angle and tapered shape of tapered roller bearings minimize stresses caused by the combination of radial and axial loads. Radial and axial loads often combine to produce combined loads on the bearing assembly. The ability to handle angular and varying angular loads has made tapered roller bearings an integral part of a variety of technical designs and industries. The tapered shape of the rollers essentially concentrates radial and axial loads into a unified load that is easier to exploit. They can harness a variety of forces by configuring two or even tapered bearings.

Tapered roller bearing loads

The angle formed by the line of contact between the outer ring and rollers and the axis of the bearing bore determines the type of load for which the bearing is best suited. The larger the angle, the better the bearing is able to handle thrust loads, but the ability to handle radial loads is proportionally reduced. Bearings equipped with single row tapered rollers can only bear axial loads in one direction. The steepness of a roller bearing’s inclination increases the thrust/axial load it can handle, while the small angle increases the radial load capacity. As the radial load increases, the bearing experiences greater stress on the sides of the bearing raceway. A shallower angle minimizes stress, thereby reducing stress on the rollers.

Types of tapered roller bearings

Different types of tapered roller bearings are suitable for different types of loads and rotational speeds. Here are several common tapered roller bearing types and their characteristics.

Single Row Tapered Roller Bearings

Single row tapered roller bearings have excellent design attributes. Single row tapered roller bearings typically have a one-piece stamped steel cage that secures the rollers to the cone and space them evenly for smooth operation. The most common tapered roller bearings of the 320 and 302 series are widely used and provide a balanced combination of strength and flexibility, making them a standard option in automotive wheels, transmissions and conveyor systems. Other applications include vehicle front wheels, differential and pinion configurations, transfer rollers, machine tool spindles and trailer wheels. Very popular trailer wheel size combinations include LM11949/LM11910, LM11749/LM11710 and L21549/L21511. Of course, there are many other bore and outer diameter tapered roller bearings available.

Matched Tapered Roller Bearing

The products of matched single row tapered roller bearings are based on the common dimensions of single row tapered roller bearings. Depending on the application requirements, matched tapered roller bearings are available in different designs and variants. Depending on the design, paired bearings are suitable for heavy radial and axial loads. The axial load capacity of tapered roller bearings increases with increasing contact angle α. The size of the contact angle is usually between 10° and 30°. The size of the angle is related to the calculation coefficient e: the larger the value of e, the larger the contact angle. Depending on the design, paired bearings position the shaft axially in both directions, with a specific axial clearance or bearing preload.

Four-row tapered roller bearings combine the inherent high load radial/thrust capabilities and direct/indirect mounting variables of tapered roller bearings into an assembly that provides maximum load ratings in the smallest space. In addition, precision applications such as machine tools, pumps and compressors often rely on matched and square bearings. These bearing sets, part numbers 30207JR/30207J2/Q and 32020 X/QDF, consist of two or four tapered roller bearings that are precisely matched during the manufacturing process. This ensures high accuracy and even load distribution, which is critical for applications where alignment and accuracy are critical.
