The Ultimate Guide to Selecting Needle Roller Bearings
Needle roller bearings are roller bearings with cylindrical rollers that are both thin and long relative to their diameter. Despite their smaller cross-section, needle roller bearings have a high load-carrying capacity. Needle roller bearings are equipped with thin and long rollers (roller diameter D≤5mm, L/D≥2.5, L is the roller length), so the radial structure is compact, and its inner diameter size and load capacity are the same as other types of bearings. , with the smallest outer diameter, especially suitable for support structures with radial installation dimensions. The surface area of the rollers and the large number of rolling load-bearing elements provide needle roller bearings with excellent load capacity and stiffness. Most radial needle roller bearings are designed to withstand axial forces in excess of 5% of the radial load. All needle bearings require some type of lubricant to help dissipate heat and reduce friction. The amount of friction depends on the load carried, the type and size of the needle bearing, the speed of rotation of the bearing and the properties of the lubricant used. Needle roller bearings, especially those with outer rings made of high-strength steel, also dampen shock and vibration.

Needle roller bearings come in many different design types. The needle roller is the load-bearing component of the bearing and is a common component for all needle roller bearing types. These allow the outer and inner rings to rotate almost friction-free. They are most commonly made of steel alloys. Raceways (if present) guide the rollers within the bearing. Although the inner and outer rings are designed to fit tightly, the necessary minimum clearance is required to account for thermal expansion and other differences. These products are typically made from carbon chromium steel or other alloys to increase hardness, fatigue resistance and dimensional stability.The bearing cage separates the rollers to keep the load evenly distributed around the bearing. They also reduce bearing noise, improve rolling conditions and prevent slippage.
Steel is the most commonly used cage material in needle roller bearings. Plastic cages may be used where operating conditions permit. Lubrication and surface treatments can reduce the heat generated by friction. Some drawn cup needle roller bearings are designed without a cage and contain a complete set of needle rollers. Full complement bearings combine maximum load carrying capacity with the low cost of drawn cup bearings. In this design, an inward-turning lip is used to secure the rollers in the bearing rings. Testing determined the following friction coefficient values for cage and full complement roller bearing designs:
Caged needle roller bearing: 15 • 10-4
Full complement needle roller bearings: 25 • 10-4

Coefficient of friction = (torque to turn bearing)/(load on bearing • bearing pitch radius)
Needle roller bearing seals
Seals isolate rollers, cages and lubricants from contaminants and moisture in harsh environments. Seals must be able to withstand the oxidation, heat and chemicals to which the bearing may be exposed. Sealed bearings often provide inner ring access holes in the outer ring so the bearing can be relubricated. Seals are very reliable when friction between the seal and the bearing or shaft is kept to a minimum. Additional surface treatment or lubrication can be used to reduce this friction. Bearings with integral seals are limited to relatively low rotational speeds compared to open bearings. Seals are usually made of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, polyurethane or fluoroelastomer. Since there is no contact between the components, there is no friction that must be taken into account in the implementation of the seal. Non-contact seals are preferred for high speeds. The most common non-contact seal is the labyrinth seal, and many of these seals are made of steel or other rigid metals.
Needle roller bearing lubrication
All needle bearings require lubrication. Most heavy-duty, machined needle roller bearing raceways may contain annular grooves and lubrication holes in the outer ring to help spread lubricant around the circumference of the bearing. Synthetic oil is most commonly used in high-quality bearings. Mineral oil is suitable for high speed use. Synthetic oil is suitable for medium to high speed. Oil exhibits good lubrication under heavy load/high speed conditions. Silicone oil has good heat resistance and will not corrode rubber, but is suitable for low speeds. Oil can be dripped, centrifuged or impregnated into the bearings.
Grease is best for medium to high rpm. Generally, lubricated bearings have lower high-speed torque than lubricated bearings, but the opposite is true at lower speeds. These are usually applied via a grease pack, but grease plating can also be used. Silicone grease has good heat resistance and will not corrode rubber, but is best suited for medium to low speed applications.
Types of needle roller bearings
Needle roller bearings are used to support mechanical moving components, bear loads and perform rotation, swing or reciprocating linear motion. Compared with general mechanical parts, needle roller bearings have higher accuracy and reliability indicators. There are many ways to classify needle roller bearings, which can be classified according to the structure type and size. The structure type is based on the direction of load the bearing bears, the shape of the rolling elements, the number of rows of rolling elements in each set of bearings, and whether it can be adjusted during operation. Classification is carried out in several directions such as heart. The size classification is based on the overall size of the bearing.
Drawn cup needle roller bearings
Drawn cup needle roller bearings are the most common type of needle roller bearings. They have a deep, thin-walled outer ring drawn from sheet metal. Heavy duty needle roller bearings (machined)
Heavy-duty needle roller bearings with machined rings for higher load-bearing applications. Machined heavy-duty needle roller bearings are bearings with low cross-section height and high load ratings. The outer ring has high rigidity and can be easily used even with light alloy bearing seats. These bearings are available in metric and inch series, both with cage and full complement roller types. Therefore, it is possible to select bearings suitable for use under various conditions such as heavy loads, high-speed or low-speed rotation. There are two main types of heavy-duty needle roller bearings with machined rings – needle roller bearings without inner rings and needle roller bearings with inner rings. The inner ringless type uses the shaft as the raceway surface, so a compact design can be achieved.
Needle roller and cage assembly
Needle Roller and cage assemblies are single- or double-row units consisting of a cage or needle rollers contained in the cage. They do not have any bearing rings and are assembled between the shaft and housing. They have a higher load-bearing capacity within a smaller working range. Since their radial cross-section is no larger than the diameter of the needle roller, needle roller and cage assemblies allow the realization of bearing configurations with a very small radial design envelope. They have a very high load carrying capacity, are suitable for high speeds and are easy to install.
One way needle roller bearing
One-way needle roller bearing is a mechanical element specially used to transmit one-way rotation torque. It allows axial force to be transmitted only in one direction but not in the other direction. One-way needle roller bearings usually consist of outer rings, inner rings, rollers and cages. There is a certain gap between the outer ring and the inner ring, allowing the rollers to roll freely within them. The function of the cage is to maintain the position of the roller and prevent it falling out of the bearing. The working principle of one-way bearings is based on the rolling friction of rollers. When a rotational torque is applied to the outer ring, the rollers are acted upon by force and begin to roll. The rolling of the roller will generate a reaction force, causing the inner ring to also start to rotate. However, when the outer ring stops rotating, the rollers immediately stop rolling and the inner ring also stops rotating. This is because the structure of one-way bearings allows the rollers to only roll in one direction but not in the other.
Thrust needle roller bearing
Thrust needle roller bearings are used in applications where axial rather than radial loads are carried. The axis of the roller is perpendicular to the axis of the bearing bore. These types of bearings can accept heavy axial loads and shock loads. This type of bearing takes up no space than a thrust washer if the associated machine parts can serve as raceways. If not, a thrust washer must be installed on the machine.
